M.A.K.U was born between the years 2009 and 2010. Most of its band members are Colombian immigrants who live in New York City. In a way, M.A.K.U is an extension of a strong movement of musicians in Colombia that are exploring with the textures of traditional music which involves the use of the native instruments.
M.A.K.U. SoundSystem makes big music that begins in traditional Afro- Colombian rhythms and ends somewhere in the punk-jazz stratosphere. Clarinet, trombone, sax, guitar, and Latin percussion supplement a rambunctious, driving rock core, creating a sound familiar enough to be danceable but always surprising.
