Médicos, Enfermeros, y Dentistas Para El Pueblo (MEDPEP) is pleased to announce its 2nd Annual Pre-Health Conference, taking place this upcoming September 8, 2012, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We are expecting around 400 students from various colleges and high schools throughout southern California to be in attendance.
MEDPEP is committed to supporting low-income Latino and underrepresented minority (URM) students through their community college experience and transition to four-year universities and health professional programs. The goal of the conference is to inform, encourage, and motivate students to improve the Latino physician supply. While the overall supply of Latino physicians will increase by nearly 30% by 2020, that growth will be dwarfed by the 74% growth in the Latino population over the same time. Increasing the Latino physician supply is critical for meeting the demand of the growing Latino population in California.
The conference will cover the following:
-Different paths toward professional schools
-Professional health provider panels
-Financial aid resources
-Updates on the California DREAM Act and Deferred Action Policy affecting
undocumented students
- Parent empowerment workshops
-Resource fair
-Networking opportunities
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Raul Ruiz, a Latino physician serving in the Coachella Valley. He is the first Latino to earn three degrees from Harvard University, in Medicine, Public Health, and Public Policy. He is currently running for Congress.
