California State University, Los Angeles announces Guillermo Zuñiga ('86), president and chief executive officer of Grifols Biologicals Inc., as the recipient of the 2012 University Service Award.

In 1979, Zuñiga began as an entry-level process operator for Alpha Therapeutic Corporation, where his professional career included management and director level positions. Recognized for his leadership abilities, he was quickly promoted to vice president and later senior vice president of manufacturing. When Grifols acquired Alpha Therapeutic, Zuñiga was immediately offered the role of president.

Grifols Biologicals Inc., located adjacent to Cal State L.A., is a manufacturer of biological products derived from human plasma used in lifesaving therapies for individuals worldwide. Zuñiga visits Cal State L.A. classrooms to introduce and expose students to careers available in the industry.

He has supported El Nido Family Centers, which, in partnership with Cal State L.A., has created a pilot mentorship program. This program provides support to high school juniors and seniors to follow educational opportunities and careers, specifically in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He has been recognized as a "Hispanic Hero" by the Hispanic College Fund.

Zuñiga is one of eight outstanding CSULA alumni and two students who will be recognized during the 38th annual Alumni Awards Gala Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, on the Cal State L.A. campus.
