ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE: The genesis of Brahms' First Symphony has given hope over the years to late bloomers and blocked writers alike; after many false starts and under the pressure of following in Beethoven's outsized footsteps, Brahms finally completed his symphony when he was 43 years old. The happy ending is that his work turned out to be truly grand and imposing, an honest-to-goodness masterpiece. With his profound interpretation, Gustavo Dudamel will bring this awe-inspiring work to life.
In contrast with Brahms, who used very little percussion (rarely more than timpani), our popular Principal Timpanist Joseph Pereira thrives in a world of things beaten, shaken, and bashed, both as a player and as a composer. His latest concerto requires three soloists and it's bound to be a thrilling experience. One of Stravinsky's brief early works sets the stage.
