?ŪOrale, mi gente!
Published on LatinoLA: December 9, 2011
It's getting as cold as refrigerated jelled menudo and an unmentionable part of a witch's anatomy, and Winter is still officially a couple weeks away here in the Land of 1000 Dances!
Strong winds hit us like an IRS garnishment -- unexpected and unfair -- taking out trees, my patio, and power poles, leaving a lot of us in the dark and cold for almost a week‘«™
‘«™thank goodness for overtime workers at the Edison Company and the DWP!!
True to his word, despite all the haters and nay-sayers and just plain old generic racists, President Obama is getting our troops out of Iraq this month‘«™ and a VERY big thank you to all of you who served over there!... that part of the World NOW knows what a REAL military force looks and acts like!
‘«™‘«™and we're glad to announce that this year, thousands of American troops will be returning home for the Holidays!
Sadly, over at the San Fernando City Hall, they're partying and having orgies at taxpayer's expense, as the Mayor, a cop, and two City Councilwomen are doing the wild thing instead of city business with NO shame!....?Ūqu?ģ gacho!...the voting public de San Fernando has asked them to step down, but they see NOTHING wrong that should compel them to do so‘«™
...and here we thought the boldness of the City of Bell scandal and the Occupy L.A. squatters trashing and crapping all over the L.A. City Hall front lawn was embarrassing ‘«™ what's the World coming to ?
On a sad note, Latino L.A. sends out our deepest condolences on the recent loss of L.A. Rhythm King's guitarist MARIO LOVATO, and to L.A. music promoter PETER JARAMILLO on the recent loss of his mother‘«™our prayers go with you, and may the warm winds of Aztlan comfort you at this time‘«™
A lot of love and our most heartiest well wishes for a quick recovery to TIERRA saxophonist VICTOR CISNEROS, and MANNY GONZALEZ of the BIG MANNY BAND, both who were recently hospitalized‘«™need both you Bruthas back on stage !
Also, PACHUCO JOSE Y LOS DIAMANTES Band were recently in an accident en route from a gig. Thankfully, none of the members of the band were seriously injured, but a female passenger was hurt and had to be hospitalized. A fundraiser concert is being planned, and you'll hear about it first here on LatinoLA .
Hope you all had a killer Thanksgiving ! Once again I thank GOD that all my family and friends had a good meal this year despite a most killer economy‘«™
‘«™nothing takes the sting out of being short of ducats this time of the year than the warmth & laughter of family, friends, kids, and a lot of good hot food!
..can't e-mail, Twitter or Facebook this‘«™can't find it on E-bay or at any holiday sale‘«™can't buy it, wrap it up, and give it away‘«™you have to be there!...
This past couple of weeks has been simply amazing as we head into the Christmas Season, watcha:
At a recent private party in Gardena, at the home of Dan and Rosalie Hernandez, TEX NAKAMURA and friends helped the Hernandez's welcome RICO DEL BARRIO back to Califas from San Antonio, Texas . Lot's of food, music and dancing, Rico charmed everyone with his Tejano two-step dancing, singing songs off his new CD "From the Shadows of the Legends," and joining Tex for an acapella performance of the classic doo-wop "What's Your Name?" Man! We had a ball! Look for an upcoming article on Rico Del Barrio in LatinoLA soon! Songs off his new CD will be featured on the East L.A. Revue and Chicano Express radio stations soon.
Later on that night, the SATISFACTION BAND packed 'em in at Maggie's Pub in Santa Fe Springs, where I got to kick up a little chancla with my Lady and friends before last call. Talk about a party ! Check them out at: www.satisfactionband.com and www.maggiespub.com.
The next night, Ruben Molina's Jive Turkey Ball at the City of Industry VFW Hall was a sold out success. This vato always throws some cool parties & concerts. A week earlier, Ruben was up in Las Vegas with some major vinyl spinning Oldies DJ's for a classic Oldies~Doo Wop spinoff party. For more info on upcoming shows, music CD's, and some great books, check out www.chicanosoul.com or www.mictlan.com. Go head on, Ruben !
The East L.A. Revue Internet Radio Station, home of the finest Latino-Chicano music in the land and around the World, has partnered up with DJ CHICO MANQUEROS & SUAVE GROOVES Records to bring you a very special Christmas CD, "The Christmas All Stars- Christmas in the Barrio". With some VERY talented and familiar artists in the mix, this latino flavored Christmas classics CD will make a great stocking stuffer, and sound good Christmas morning around the tree. On sale now!
A recent CD release party December 3rd at Covina 's Taste of Texas was a sold out success, with the Christmas All Stars performing live and making it happen, and they plan to do it again on December 16th at Cuban Pete's (formerly the Lakewood Hop). For more info, check out the calendar section or log onto www.eastLArevue.com.
The Latin Legends of Soul concert at the Universal-Gibson Theater last Friday in Hollywood was an all out party for the big kids. A little over 6,000 people jammed into the place to hear acts like TIERRA, THEE MIDNITERS, JOE BATAAN, the HEARTBREAKERS, the DUPREMES, JOE BRAVO, RENE & RENE, SKIP MAHONEY & the CASUALS, the ROYAL CHESSMEN, and EL CHICANO. All the acts & music were great, with L.A. diva BERTHA OROPEZA joining EL CHICANO on stage as a surprise special guest. Joe Bataan, of course, melted hearts like only Joe can!
The next day found me on the road to Oxnard for the 4th Annual Tamale Festival. Not getting enough, we were once again treated to the sultry voice of Bertha Oropeza, as she joined her group CHICO for a killer performance, and the powerful sounds of TIERRA closed the evening of partying and dancing in soft chilly breezes from the sea.
Later on that night, we joined singer PEPE MARQUEZ up at the famous Palms Restaurant in Carpinteria, where the HOUSE ARREST band was plying their trade in fine fashion, as we dined and danced in luxury for just a few bucks!
HOUSE ARREST is a surprisingly mellow but lively group of music veterans playing some nice dance tunes. Check them out and book them at www.HouseArrestBand.com.
The Palms Restaurant is one of those affordable spots that you have to stop in at if you're traveling up the coast and are in the mood for a char-broiled steak, (you can even cook it yourself!) tropical cold drinks, and great live music & dancing just 2 blocks from the beach. I highly recommend it!
Word on the street was that RAY CARRION's pre-Christmas bash at Montebello's PALOMA ROOM (formerly the Montebello Inn) was bumpin' wall to wall with the live sounds of his EAST LOS, and the EUROPA bands. More shows are being planned as the Gente's demand for live music keeps places like the Paloma Room on Whittier Bloulevard busy and Brown !
This past Wednesday, I was able to catch SAL RODRIGUEZ and friends performing live at the popular Sylmar gathering spot, CASA TORRES, on the corner of Glenoaks and Hubbard Avenue in Sylmar for some food and drinks. Sal tells me he's there every Wednesday with different musical guests every week.
This week, JERRY SALAS of EL CHICANO, and JOEY NAVARRO from TIERRA dropped by and jammed. Sitting in the audience I spotted East L.A. Revue Radio's very own CHICO MANQUEROS, and LOWRIDER MAGAZINE-TOKYO publisher and owner of BARRIO GOLD RECORDS in Japan, Mr. SHIN MIYATA enjoying some suds and comida. Party was on!
Good performances and a good, mellow crowd....See you next Wednesday!

... thanks, Rudy & Arlene ! You are one special & gifted couple !
Don't know about a lot of you guys, but it's been a couple a years since I attended a live play here in Los Angeles, home of the richest talent and arts.
The Los Angeles Theater Center ( aka "the face of the World"), the Urban Theater Movement , and the Latino Theater Company have joined up to produce a play by MARIO PINERO entitled "Short Eyes". Nominated for 6 Tony Awards, the reaction I get from people who have seen the play is "Wow! Heavy duty drama and some fine acting ... more people should see this one!"...so I'm going!
Running until 12/11/2011, get your tickets & info at : 866- 811-4111.
I thank you all for having logged onto LatinoLA , EastL.A. Revue Radio, and Chicano Express Radio over the past year...more Gente are connected because of that..
?ŪOrale! It's been a long year, this 2011... I still joke that the world is gonna end in 2012 according to my Mayan ancestors, so I ain't buying no new shoes yet...
...but until it does, I invite you to join me in keeping prayers directed at the heavens that we have a better year, see less suffering and hard times among our people, less wars in which our young men and women die, more respect and less abuse of our women and children, and carnalismo and good music in EVERYBODY's soul !
Happy Holidays, mi Gente...from the Land of 1000 Dances!
