Vicente Fernandez announced that he will be retiring from music and live performances this year after wrapping up what will be his last tours of Latin America, Spain and the U.S.

Argentine rock icon Luis Alberto Spinetta died last week at age 62 from lung cancer.

The Premios Oye took place in Mazatlan, Mexico last week. Zoe, Cristian Castro, Alejandra Guzman, Los Tigres del Norte, Marco Antonio Solis, Vicente Fernandez and Espinoza Paz were among this year's winners.

New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has partnered with Cinema Tropical and Ambulante to present three films as part of a "Documentary Fortnight" from February 16-28th. Michelle Rodriguez is among the celebrities who will be featured on PBS' "Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr." The 10-part series will air on Sundays starting on March 25th at 8 PM ET.

A prison fire in Honduras killed at least 356 people. Inmates died locked in their cells as firefighters tried to locate the official who had the keys.

The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning urging Americans to avoid all but essential travel to all or parts of 14 Mexican states as shootouts, kidnappings and carjackings have increased as well as cartels. The states listed in the warning are Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacan and Nayarit as well as Baja California, Colima and Morelos.

At least 47 people were killed when an overloaded boat smuggling migrants from Dominican Republic en route to Puerto Rico capsized just off the Dominican coast.

Former Bronco keyboard player Erik Garza Garza was shot to death by his kidnappers this week in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Garza was kidnapped on February 4th.

TV Azteca's channels have been dropped by Mexican cable TV carriers Megacable, Cablecom, Cablemas and TVI, due to a dispute over terms because Azteca is now charging for content that used to be free. The result is a loss of over 4 million cable viewers for Azteca.

According to new data from the Pew Hispanic Center and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Hispanics are expected to account for 74% of the growth in the U.S. labor force from 2010 to 2020. Hispanics accounted for 36% of the total increase in the labor force from 1990-2000 and 54% from 2000-2010.
