InnerCity Struggle (ICS), is a social justice, community-building, and membership-driven organization based in the Eastside of Los Angeles. ICS works with youth and families to promote safe, healthy, and non-violent communities. Through campus-based clubs called United Students (US), we organize and engage high school youth and provide leadership development, cultural education, and academic services to empower young people to develop into agents for systemic social change. The purpose of US is to build student power to organize toward educational justice and create campaigns to challenge existing social and economic inequities in the current educational system.
Job Description: The US Site Organizer would be responsible for effectively operating the United Students club at 2 East Los Angeles high schools, which require advanced organizing skills to facilitate school-change campaigns. We are looking for someone with previous experience in developing popular education curriculum for youth, facilitating and coordinating youth leadership training and a track record of effective base building.
Key youth component responsibilities include:
Develop and implement outreach strategies to engage youth at 2 school sites (i.e. phone-banking, conducting classroom presentations, lunch-time outreach, etc.)
Coordinate student-led campaigns at 2 high school campuses
Manage and coordinate weekly reports, evaluations, and documentation of US activities
Develop and maintain relationships with school staff
Work with other US staff to coordinate cross-campus activities
Responsible for the development and training of core youth members
Travel for United Students related activities (retreats, conferences, networking)
Other duties as identified by the Director of Youth Organizing and Movement Building
InnerCity Struggle is seeking a person who meets the following qualifications:
College graduate who holds, at minimum, a Bachelor of Arts degree - or related experience
Minimum 2 years experience in community organizing or youth organizing in low-income communities of color
Track record of accomplishing goals and objectives individually and in a team atmosphere
Experience in developing program and communication materials
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced, time sensitive environment
Effective and concise writing and communication skills
Ability to work effectively with school and district leaders
Ability to work in a team setting and provide/receive constructive feedback
Experience in grass-roots fundraising
Microsoft Office and Adobe Illustrator experience - emphasis on program material development, fliers and brochures
CA Drivers License and access to a reliable automobile (with at minimum, liability insurance)
Bilingual in Spanish is preferred
