It's been a minute, but things continue hot & heavy out here in the Land of 1000 Dances.
Hope everybody had a great 4th of July. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena had one of the best fireworks shows in the Land, with thousands of good people kicking it in the grass an enjoying the freedom of the U. S. of A !
Out in old San Fernando, the pathetic comedy of amateur wannabe politics continues, as the city government continues to embarrassingly crumble & tumble in the public eye.
Now‘«™besides the Mayor, Police, & City Council members sleeping with each other, cheating on their spouses, lying to the public, mismanaging public funds, intimidating & harassing residents for asserting their rights, losing the public trust & respect, and finally, siccing the police on people like hungry Dobermans during city council meetings‘«™now they're beating each other up and putting restraining orders against each other, as they hobble towards an expensive recall election and they STILL continue to refuse to step down as residents have demanded for almost a year‘«™pay & perks must be pretty good to lose your self respect over‘«™que lastima!
For more inside info, check out www.sanfernandosun.com. Some chisme to da bone! Our respects go out to the staff of the local newspaper & voice of the people, who, even though a public attempt was made to intimidate & discredit them, they courageously continued to represent and promote the true voice & interests of the good people of San Fernando! [/i]?ŪSe aventaron![/i]
But a good thing that occurred out in San Fernando last week was a "Cruising San Fernando Blvd" event featuring WAR and well-known comedian Gilbert Esquivel. Heard it was a pretty good party, with most San Fernando residents laughing at their so-called "elected leaders", and wishing they would just cruise on outta here!
Also last week, we traveled up to Santa Barbara and caught PEPE MARQUEZ and his LATIN SOUL REVIEW Band in action. Brutha had it going on! For info on future performances, check out www.pepemarquez.com.
Edgar Salas, Vanessa Hernandez, and the TEASE Band recently packed the house at the Club Sash in Norwalk, where I almost wore out a good pair of dancing chanclas boogying my buns off! (happy sore feet the next morning, LOL!) . Check them out at www.teaseband.com ‘«™not bad at all !
This past Saturday, the "BROWN VOICES of COMEDY" kicked off a great show at Rudy's Baja Grill in East L.A., featuring El Pinche Peter, Miguel Rojas, and Noel Rod, with LOUIE PARRA & THE MAD LATINS finishing of the show. Word is the party was off the chain. For info on future shows 323-722-7992.
Putting out his 3rd show for East L.A. Internet Radio, Richard "Sugarbear" Navarro is getting on the national radar with his "Dreams of Doo-Wop" shows, playing some great classic Do-Wops, original R&B, and early rock & roll from the 1950's & 60's. Check him out on www.eastLArevue.com, along with all the other great shows and Vinyl Classics shows. Heard coast to coast and around the World, 24 hrs a day, rain or shine !
Couple of weeks ago, we caught Dennis Ulibari and the IMPULSE Band out at the Route 66 Caf?ģ in Duarte. With a change up from their usual Chicano Rock genre, they are starting to hit some classic rock and soft rock tunes from the 70's & 80's. Not bad‘«™.this Saturday, they're performing a Original Mike's in Santa Ana, then on July 28th they hit the stage at the Taste of Texas in Covina for the THEE Mr. DURAN fundraiser‘«™check 'em out.
Our best wishes go out to SAMMY MEDINA of the BALANCE Band, wishing him a speedy recovery from recent surgery, and hope to see him back on stage performing like only Sammy can! Check out BALANCE Band on facebook for updates.
‘«™go head on, Sammy!...hopes are you'll be hitting that stage at the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet this Sunday, July 22nd
A most interestingly different and inspiring art/music event happens this Sunday at the Ford Anson Theater as Beat the Drum 2012- East Los meets West Los Festival happens at 8 pm.This festival, staged for the first time last year at the Craft & Folk Art Museum, captures the rhythms of 'drum life' as an L.A. experience, linking together the cultures of East and West. East L.A. Taiko, blending Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms with Japanese taiko; CAVA, performing bolero/tropical and primal drumming with taiko and cajon; and Atabey, delivering Puerto Rican bomba in drumming and dance, have already signed on. Stay tuned as more ensembles get added to the bill, including those with West African and Aztec influences. Drumming is the universal heartbeat. For more info & tickets: www.fordtheaters.org.
Tuesday, July 17th, SUSIE HANSEN , the "Queen of Salsa", and her band hit the stage at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena, starting at 6pm. FREE admission. For more info, check out the calendario listing here on LatinoLA.com.
Friday, July 20th, COLD DUCK hits the stage at Maggie's Pub in Santa Fe Springs, then the next night, Saturday July 21st, they'll be packing them in at Club Sash in Norwalk. COLD DUCK, a popular Chicano Rock & R&B band, has been around and making parties happen since 1972, and they're still going strong. The summer cruise to Ensenada still has some cabins left as well. For more info: www.colduck.com.
July 28th, a fundraiser for the incomparable THEE Mr. DURAN, will take place at the Taste of Texas Restaurant in Covina, featuring RAY CARRION and his LATIN ALL STAR Band, the LRS/EXPOSURE Band, the BIG MANNY Band, LOS FABULOCOS, the IMPULSE Band, SMOOTH RESPONSE, and BUMPTOWN.
Come on out and party, dance, enjoy some good food and ice cold drinks with some great live music and a great crowd and help raise funds to keep Chicano artists & music on world wide Internet TV and cable TV. Like they say in East L.A.: " Nobody rides for free, and love don't pay the rent" ‘«™this is a truly noble cause, as Mr. Duran celebrates almost 12 years of bringing the Brown Sound to the eyes of the World when nobody else would! For tickets & info: 323-807-8054.
See YOU there!
If you're on the other side of town that Saturday, July 28th, SATISFACTION takes the stage at the Club Sash in Norwalk, starting at 9pm. Always a crowd pleaser and great dance-party band, check them out at www.satisfactionband.com.
And if THAT ain't enough on this hot July weekend, the Annual OXNARD SALSA FESTIVAL is happening July 28th & 29th . With free admission, food, live music, dancing, arts & crafts, a beer & wine garden, children's area, a salsa tasting tent & contest, all under the sea breeze kissed sunshine of the "Barrio by the Sea" that is Oxnard, Califas, this event draws over a half million people from all over the World every year. For more info: www.oxnardsalsafestival.com.
As always, there's just not enough time and space for the beautiful Art and Cultura of our people to share with the World, but TIA CHUCHA's gives it our best shot here in the Land of 1000 Dances. Check them out at www.tiachucha.com ~ where "minds meet‘«™for a change‘«™"
Formerly known as the BROTHERS n' BLUES Band, The MARK SELLS Band has a great new Blues CD out . All the way from WestSide San Antonio Texas, RICO DEL BARRIO gives up a faithful tribute to the taste of Chicano Oldies but Goodies with his new CD. Both CD's will be spotlighted in upcoming shows on www.eastLArevue.com in the near future, so watch out for some fresh "new stuff" coming up the pipe.
