What Jenni Rivera Meant For "Us"....

CNN, The New York Times, LA Times, ABC, NBC, NPR etc.... mainstream media all talking about our immense loss, given we lost not only a phenomenal singer, mother, and woman but a trailblazer...

We lost a Mexican American woman with whom many of us felt so tremendously identified, one who held her transnational culture and bilingual talents with very high regards.

She represented the multi-generational and the so many mixed status families that are so prevalent among our community. Her success was the model for the American Dream for which so many immigrant families work hard for, to ensure that their children have the American opportunity at success. Her legacy exemplifies the value of hard work and entrepreneurship...

The news of this tragedy, however, has opened the door to speak of her legacy, the immigrant experience, the Mexican American experience, and her defiance of culture imposed gender roles....

As a proud Mexicana / Chicana I thank JR for her legacy as it will finally initiate a mainstream discussion of who we are and what the American experience mean for us who have lived biculturally at the Mexican and American cultural border all of our life .........
