Monument Releasing announces the LA theatrical release of Cannes winner CHRONIC, written and directed by the internationally acclaimed Mexican auteur Michel Franco. The film opens in at Laemmle Music Hall on September 30 in Los Angeles, with additional cities to follow. The film premiered and won the Best Screenplay Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
The fourth film by Franco (AFTER LUCÍA, DANIEL AND ANA) and his English-language debut, stars Academy Award nominated actor Tim Roth as David, an in-home nurse who works with terminally ill patients. Efficient and dedicated to his profession, David develops strong, even intimate, relationships with each person he cares for. But outside of his work, David is ineffectual, awkward, and reserved – effects of his chronic depression – and he needs each patient as much as they need him. Having long carried a burden of guilt and remorse, David must face his past in order to heal.
CHRONIC is inspired by the nurse who cared for Franco's grandmother in the six months leading up to her death. Despite of the constant support of family the nurse became the source of her most intimate relationship in her final days. The nurse mourned too at the loss of his grandmother and regardless of the difficult emotions she felt at the loss of each patient she would immediately look for another terminally ill patient to replace her mourning condition and help her connect with life again.
The film is produced by Lucía Films, the company behind Lorenzo Vigas' FROM AFAR (2015), the first Latin American film to ever win the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, and Gabriel Ripstein's 600 MILES (2015), winner of the Best First Film Award at the Berlinale.
