Activism 101 for a Broad-minded America

I love New Years. That's right. I'm using the plural form. There's the start of the Solar New Year on January 1. Then we have the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, on January 28 this year. Also, I count my birthday as the start of my personal New Year. This is around the same time as Nowruz, or Persian New Year, which is March 21st in 2017. Rounding all this off is the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah (because of my dad's influence), starting September 20, 2017.

New Year 2017 is special, since it is the early dawn of a pushback against Trump's agenda and those of his supporters and enablers. Trump's agenda in its worst expression encourages hate crimes, scientific ignorance, and cult-like beliefs that deny social and civic equality to women, non-white minorities, and LGBT citizens. Strong and independent U.S. press journalists are also being thwarted and threatened (see Committee to Protect Journalists at

So, what can you do? You can resolve to make a stand for a decent and inclusive United States of America. At the very least, know something about what is going on locally and nationally around you. Stay informed from a variety of sources, both domestic and international (Western and Eastern). Challenge fake news and Twitter lies.

Bookmark the Huffington Post and AlterNet to check out what progressives are talking about. If you have time, read and review "Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda" at Scan for groups of like-minded individuals at Test the waters, and try attending a meeting or two.

Shake a leg. Shake up your world. It all starts and ends with you in 2017!
