News from the Brown Side of Town

¡Orale, Mi Gente!

The month of August has come and gone, memories made, and music enjoyed.

As usual, I refrain (at the request of my Lady and other important friends) from voicing my total diatribe regarding our Country's political climate.

I feel I could go on for hours regarding my utter disappointment, anger, and resentment towards our current Federal Government Administration's actions/inactions regarding the virtual support & approval of the racial hate groups, agendas, and individuals that threaten the moral fabric of our great Country, culminating with the Presidential pardon of a convicted racist & former top law official who openly and brazenly abused the power of his office and caused severe suffering and deaths of Latinos during his racial profiling, arresting, and detaining of Latinos in a manner reminiscent of a Nazi concentration camp.

All I will say in addition & conclusion, is that I sincerely thank all the GOOD, honest, and morally courageous WHITE PEOPLE working, protesting, and publicly standing up for the rights, freedom, and equality of EVERYONE! Now THAT'S what makes America great !

...no "again" required!

I also wish to send our prayers & support of the good people of the great state of Texas during this time of national & personal crisis. The conditions there rival a war zone...and we wish them well, and thank all the first responders and rescuers for being there!

Just in case you haven't given it most thought...less than 120 days till Christmas ! What you got going?

The best music on the World Wide Internet Radio waves is still found on www.eastLArevue.com after 11 years, heard coast to coast & around the World 24/7, although there are many new up and comers that do justice to the art of music as well! Gracias for your continued support!

Word on the street is that 2 of the hottest dance/party bands making the rounds & gigging hard this Summer all over the Land of 1000 Dances for the big kids are the HARBOR GROOVE Band and The IMPULSE Band. I've seen both these bands polish it up and put a "spit shine" on some fine performances that have packed dance floors over the past year. Check them out on Facebook or look for their upcoming performances in the calendar section of LatinoLA.com.

The HARBOR GROVE Band recently announced that veteran L.A. Chicana vocalist DENISE (formerly 'Eileen" of SATISFACTION Band fame) BENAVIDES has joined the group to add to the already heavy talent lineup. As many veteran readers of LatinoLA recall, I wrote a number of stories about Ms Benavides during her 6 years with the great SATISFACTION Band prior to her brief hiatus. Well now...SHE'S BACK ! For more info, check out Harbor Groove on FACEBOOK.

The IMPULSE Band will headlining a "Spooktacular" music show on October 29th at the famed A MI HACIENDA Restaurant in Pico Rivera that will also feature live performances by SANGRIA, TEASE, The CHAMPAGNE Band, guest singer MATT LEGASPI, with Thee Angel Baby as your House DJ and MC. For tickets & info: 661-468-0972.

The month of July ended with a successful and well attended Music Chicanofest celebrating the life of the Father of Chicano music, the late great LALO GUERRERO at the Los Angeles Plaza de Cultura y Artes on Olvera street, hosted by Lalo's son Dan Guerrero and our very own Abelardo de la Peña Jr. of LatinoLA.

1940's Lalo Guerrero inspired DJ music, screening of the short film "Las Ardillitas de Lalo Guerrero", and live music performances by The Neighborhood Music School's Jazz Ensemble, Los Tres Souls Bolero group, Las Lindas Mexicanas Mariachi group, The Vicky Tafoya Band, a Pachuco fashion show sponsored by EL PACHUCO Clothing of Fullerton, and a fine performance by the 18 piece WISEGUYS Big Band made it a memorable day for the estimated 1000 attendees.

A free tour of the West Coast Chicano History Museum, and an after party featuring PACHUCO JOSE y Los DIAMANTES on First street in East L.A.made for one of the better 2017 summer memories for me and many others.

The first weekend of August found us in the Inland Empire historical city of Banning, California, where I was privileged to host & MC Jimmy Sterling's TRIBUTE TO MOTOWN Show at the famous Farm's House Restaurant, featuring some outstanding live musical performances by the Jimmy Sterling Experience, Alfonse Franklin, Garland Green, and The Three Diamonds.

Of course, the show was off the chain, as the audience was treated to a great tribute of Motown music that had people dancing and singing along!

The packed house show included sound & DJ action by the Inland Empire's Ronnie Leonard Romo, and a back up and after party in the back lounge bar of the Farm's House was provided by the hard hitting Hip Hop DJ JoJo Sanchez, who kept the people dancing up till closing.

For more info on Jimmy Sterling's upcoming shows, look him up on Facebook, or call him at 909-648-7754, and tell him you heard it from Frankie Firme & LatinoLA.

The Soul Man de Santa Barbara, Mr. Pepe Marquez, released his third music video on YouTube this month, produced by Mr. Carlos Guillen, featuring Ray Carrion, to coincide with the release of his 5th smash CD titled "Let's take a trip", which is on sale now. Pepe has graciously dedicated his new music project to friend and former band mate, and one of Aztlan's more popular singers, the late great Lady Becky Cordova...Git on witcho bad self, Pepe!

2 weeks ago, myself & Brother East L.A. Revue Internet Radio DJ Sugarbear were honored to host & MC Pepe's CD release party up in Goleta, California, at the High Sierra Grill House, where a large crowd enjoyed live music, good food, and about 50 lucky people got a FREE CD.

The next day was a beautiful Southern Califas afternoon as Babo Martinez and the well known PACHUCO CAR CLUB of Ventura County hosted their annual "Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon" Car & Bike Show and Concert, held at the Rio Del Valle Middle School in Oxnard, California, benefiting and honoring U.S. Military Veterans.

Brotherhood, respect, and love was in the air as classic car enthusiasts came from near & far, even a couple of Homies from Japan!

There was probably a day long surge of over a thousand or so people, and by all guesstimates, more than a couple million dollars worth of BEAUTIFUL classic vintage cars and some great looking motorcycles. For the car/bike aficionado, it was like a mouth watering, traveling history museum , with beautifully fully restored cars from the 1930's-40's-50's and 60's .

There were also some of the best custom Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the West Coast I've ever seen....some would have made Dr. Al Carlos Hernandez himself take notice and proclaim "Damn!".

Some very fine & funky DJ music was provided by the famous THROWBACK SUNDAYS DJ crew, with special guest, JIMMY REYES of 104.7 FM Old School Radio, as they kept music flowing and going all day long, and I was honored to be the MC of this fine show for the 3rd year, which gets bigger every year.

The headliner entertainment did not disappoint, as RAY CARRION and THEE LATIN ALL STARS brought in on full force with some of the best hip adult Latino music talent currently on the West Coast, with a 2 hour concert that will be remembered for a long time!

The talent read like a "Who's-Who?" of L.A. Chicano Music, featuring Ray Carrion, Steve Salas, Papo Rodriguez, Hank Castro, Jimmy Espinosa, Rocky Padilla, Tex Nakamura, Bobby Loya, Bobby Navarrette, John Burrola, Mike Castenon, Tony Hernandez, and Adrian Monge, with surprise guest singer Pepe Marquez and bassist Juano Garcia.

It was fitting then, in our current tumultuous political situation, and with at least 1,000 people listening live & in person, Steve Salas gave an inspiring message about Chicanismo, peace, & togetherness, as the band struck into Steve & TIERRA's trademark song "Together", which drew a lot of people to dance in the sunshine as the audience, myself, and the entire band sang along to the chorus of "Together" for a great finale...it was one of those moments where you just had to be there to feel it!..it got emotional for a lot of us!

Many thanks to Mr. Babo Martinez and the Ventura County Chapter of PACHUCO CAR CLUB for a great event. See y'all next year !

The 5th Annual Chicano Family Festival is coming to Fresno on September 9th, and the 9th Annual Latino Art & Wine Show is coming to Fresno September 30th. For more info, look up my Home~boy Rick Garcia on Facebook. These events are ALWAYS a great happening, and I will joining the Art & Wine Show on September 30th. Fresno be happening in September!

Ray Carrion and Thee Latin All Stars, which spotlight such L.A. music favorites as Steve Salas, Rocky Padilla, Hank Castro, and many others, have been making a MAJOR dent in our current culture of American-Latino R&B, Old School, Oldies, Funk, live dance music shows and concerts these past 2 years, with celebrity artists and several well known Latin Rock/Funk/Jazz bands in the mix, and I have been fortunate and honored to have been involved with many of his shows, as both House DJ and MC, along with the incomparable Thee Mr. Duran of Internet Television fame.

So far, we've had a Motown flavored show, 70's throwback disco show, Old School Music & comedy show, Holiday shows, and four classic Battle of the Bands shows at different venues with many of today's top artists, that have all had good attendance.

Now, Ray takes it another step up with a great show featuring the King of Latin Soul, Mr. JOE BATAAN, in 2 power packed concerts featuring Joe Bataan with Thee Latin All Stars, comedian GILBERT ESQUIVEL, hosted by The Mr. Duran.

I have been given the nod to be House DJ and co-host on September 8th at Steven's Steakhouse in East L.A. and on September 9th at Casa Lopez in Oxnard. Special guests will also include Pepe Marquez and Juano Garcia.

As of this writing, both shows are close to being sold out and may not be back until next year. For tickets & info, call 323-895-2863.

As if that isn't enough, Steven's Steakhouse has been having Summer Friday night dance shows with popular bands like BALANCE, LOUIE PARRA & The MAD LATINS, COLD DUCK, HARBOR GROOVE and others, while venues like The IV Lounge in Norwalk, Maggie's Pub & Bruce's in Santa Fe Springs, The Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet, Katie Jake's & Tres Vinos in Covina, the El Monte Moose Lodge in El Monte, and the Presidente Restaurant in Northridge continue to offer good live entertainment and dancing for that good looking, mature audience that appreciates good music, good entertainment, dancing and a good time.

Continuing the trend of "The Big One's" in concert in the Land of 1000 Dances that draws that good looking mature crowd from all over, Ray Carrion will be presenting a great Pachuco Zoot Suit Dance Concert that will bring out the pride a lot of our parents and grandparents carried in the City of Angels that we all have a traditional attraction to.
Hosted by the one & only THEE MR. DURAN

TIERRA will also be releasing their latest CD titled "TIERRA ya llego!" Yes indeed, this will be one of the great ones of 2017, happening at the A MI HACIENDA Restaurant in Pico Rivera. Tickets will go on sale soon, so call 323-895-2863 to get your discount advance tickets. There will also be a $100.00 prize or best Pachuco & Pachuca dress up!...Vamanos pues!

One of L.A.'s legendary and iconic Chicano Music Legends, Mr. Steve Salas, known as the co-founder and original voice of the group TIERRA, recently granted an exclusive interview to LatinoLA, talking about his colorful musical career and new music projects. Story coming soon, here, only on LatinoLA.com....stay tuned!

One of the better music shows bringing in the 2017 Holiday season will be Saturday, November 11th, at the VFW Post 1944 in the City of Industry featuring one of the original East L.A. Chicano Music Hall of Fame Rock & Rollers LIL' RAY JIMENEZ and his band, along with the ever popular CHICO, featuring Bertha Oropeza. CHICO will also be releasing their newest CD.

Hosted by Thee Mr. DURAN, with yours truly as House DJ and co-host, this will be one great nostalgic music dance! For tickets & info: 323-895-2863.
