Q Youth Foundation presents Eastside Queer Stories Festival, a production that builds healthy communities by featuring new works from emerging playwrights in the LGBTQIA+ community on National Coming Out Week. The show will open at Aerial House Performance Space in El Sereno October 2017.
Eastside Queer Stories Festival brings audiences laughs and tears through a series of 10-minute short plays exploring love, relationships, friendship, family, empowerment, and owning one's identity.
This production grew out of Q Youth Foundation's Eastside Queer Storytelling events throughout the East Los Angeles area to develop a brave, inclusive space where LGBTQIA+ artists and community members can workshop their ideas and stories for the stage.
Latinx playwright Henry Kelly, who wrote for Eastside Queer Stories Festival 2016, stated, "This festival allowed me to go beyond the social mainstream of what a story is, and create a world where the focus is on who we (the queer community) are. Being queer is not an "idea" it is a reality."
Many of the 2017 playwrights involved have come from other arts, such as visual art, music performance, poetry, dance, long-form storytelling, corporeal miming and more.
The Eastside Queer Stories Festival team hopes that audiences from all walks of life will leave the theater inspired and open to the rich history of stories from the LGBTQIA+ community.
