Marvel Launches Latino Superhero Team


Marvel Comics, under the guidance of editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, is launching a new all-Latino superhero team called the Santerians. The main character, Nestor Rodriguez, is transformed into his superhero alter-ego Eleggua after an Afro-Caribbean Santeria ceremony.

ABC topped the ratings this season for English-language programming among Hispanic viewers, holding six of the top ten shows. "Dancing With The Stars", "Grey's Anatomy" and "Desperate Housewives" were all in the top 10.

Protestors returned to MacArthur Park last week, site of the violent clash with Los Angeles police on May 1st. The peaceful protest went off with no incidents.

Mexico City‘«÷s Vive Latino Latin Rock festival topped box office charts in North America for the week of May 5th, grossing $2.5 million and selling 107,000 tickets.

After shopping around a five-picture deal to several studios, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez I??arritu have signed a $100 million deal with Universal Pictures through their new company Cha Cha Cha. Each of the three will direct a film, and Cha Cha Cha will produce an additional 2 films with directors Carlos Cuaron (Alfonso's brother) and Rodrigo Garcia.

A recent article in the New York Times spotlights the growing number of Mexican consulates opening in unlikely places across the country as immigration grows in places like St. Paul, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Omaha and Raleigh, NC. According to the article, recent census data shows that Arkansas had the fastest growing Hispanic population in the country this decade, increasing 48% in just five years.

AOL Latino will be premiering a new online reality show called "Fashionistas". The winner will design a red carpet gown for a Latina celebrity. Designers can enter at: http://www.aollatino.com.

The Cannes Film Festival is taking place this week and Michael Moore's "Sicko" has been getting a bit of heat from the press and also from blogger Luis Moro via a video posted on YouTube. www.LuisMoroNews.BlogSpot.com

Joe Uva participated in his first upfront presentation as CEO of Univision this week stressing the importance of the audience‘«÷s loyalty and trust in the network.

In the wake of its recent upfront presentation and national launch, LATV announced this season's lineup for "LATV en Concierto" a series of live performances at the LATV studios. Among the artists featured this season are Calle 13, Frankie J, Pitbull, Aterciopelados, The Pinker Tones, Ozomatli, Allison, Zoe and Motel.

Tony Sarroca has joined The Bravo Group as chief creative officer. Sarroca was previously partner and chief creative officer at Young & Rubicam in Chile.

An article this week in Advertising Age magazine focuses on the role of Hispanic media in the growing political influence of Latino voters. According to the article, over the past decade the Latino vote has grown by almost 50%, with Latino voter registration up one-third since 1996. The article cites the active role Hispanic media takes in inspiring political participation in contrast to their mainstream English-language counterparts.

In other comic book news, Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez is also creating a series based on the characters Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon, whose ongoing story has been told in the band's albums.

Rick Najera's Latinologues will be performed at this year's Latino Laugh Festival in Los Angeles on June 22nd. The Festival, hosted by George Lopez, will also feature Cheech Marin, Paul Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias, and proceeds will go to First Star, an organization to improve the child welfare system in the U.S.

"The Other Conquest", a film set in Mexico in the 1520s, opens in theaters on June 1st. The film tells the struggle of an Aztec Emperor's son to preserve the Aztec religious and cultural identity during the Spanish invasion of Mexico.
