The Corporate Ladder Can Be Climbed In Heels

Maria Contreras-Sweet, founding chairwoman of PROMERICA BANK, the first Latino-owned bank in California in more than 30 years, will deliver the keynote address at The Phenomenal Women Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

Contreras-Sweet will join YWCA Greater Los Angeles (YWCA/GLA) during its annual luncheon to recognize and spotlight more than 200 outstanding Los Angeles-area businesswomen from the corporate and non-profit sectors.

"Through this awards luncheon, the YWCA/GLA demonstrates the strength and accomplishments of women, and the progress they have made in their places of work and community life. It is important that we take the time to recognize and share the stories of some of these leaders who have served to inform, guide and inspire our young girls," says Contreras-Sweet. "I am honored to be associated with such an inspiring organization that dedicates itself to the empowerment and advancement of women."

Contreras-Sweet was the first Hispanic female member of a California governor's cabinet, Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing, and is also founding president of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality.

"The Phenomenal Women Awards Luncheon is one of the few places where women of diverse backgrounds and career paths can congregate and celebrate the positive achievements of women in Los Angeles," said YWCA/GLA CEO Faye Washington.
