Spanish-language resources for Latinos living with paralysis

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis. During the National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month in September, the Reeve Foundation Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) reminds Latinos living with paralysis of the incomparable Spanish-language resources available.

The Reeve Foundation currently estimates that there are approximately 400,000 people living with a spinal cord injury. Paralysis can be caused by a congenital or acquired medical disorder as well as motor vehicle crashes, sports accidents, serious falls or violent acts. Around 37 percent of Latinos know someone who is living with paralysis, yet more than half are not aware of the resources available to them.

Christopher Reeve once said, "I understand first-hand how terribly frightening it is to suddenly become paralyzed. Being active one day and immobile the next thrusts you without warning into an entirely new existence. The changes are enormous and overwhelming."

Since its inception in 2002, the Reeve Foundation PRC has been dedicated to improving the quality of life of those living with paralysis. The PRC promotes independence and well-being and provides resources for caregivers on how to manage and offer enough assistance to their loved one while also encouraging independence.

The PRC also offers an extensive electronic library containing useful information for those living with paralysis. These materials can be obtained at no cost through an interlibrary loan from several community libraries. The PRC has also produced a Paralysis Resource Guide that provides a plethora of information from how to prevent secondary conditions, such as depression, to how to locate local recreational activities for those living with paralysis. This guide is available in Spanish and English. The PRC library and Paralysis Resource Guide can be obtained by visiting www.paralisis.org or by calling (800) 539-7309.

The Paralysis Resource Center (PRC), a program of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and formed through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has established a Multicultural Outreach Program to promote informed health care decisions and active and independent living among those in the Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American/Pacific Islander and Native American communities living with paralysis. For more information about the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation or to obtain information about the PRC or how to improve the quality of life for someone living with paralysis please visit our website at www.paralysis.org or www.paralisis.org, or call (800) 539-7309.
