CHELA: Tragic, Comedic, Love and Lunacy

Meadowbrook Production presents Dulce Maria Solis' CHELA taking place on Wednesdays, October 6th, 13th and 20th at 8pm at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 4th St in Santa Monica.

Based on the true-life story of the playwright's mother, award-winning writer/performer Dulce Maria Solis, CHELA, yields a tragic and comedic tale of love, lunacy, domestic violence, and sexual taboos. As the oldest girl of fifteen in a poor Mexican Family, CHELA rides and slaughters pigs for the family's meals, rises to marble queen in street competitions, and chases boys away from her precocious sister. This tumultuous, but simplistic child-hood ends when the mixed agendas of her mother and the men who surround her, thrust her into a series of tragic events. Forced to immigrate illegally to the United States and tricked into a loveless marriage, CHELA recounts her struggle to reclaim her sexuality and a life worth living for.

Dulce Maria Solis has performed at the Actor's Alliance Festival at the Lyceum Space (San Diego REP) and won Outstanding Female Performance. She has also performed CHELA at the Centro Cultural de la Raza and California State University of San Marcos in San Diego, the Frida Kahlo and CASA 0101 Theaters in Los Angeles and at the MECA theatre in Houston, Texas.

Due to the explicit nature of the program, no one under 18 will be admitted without a parent.

Tickets for CHELA are $25.00 and can be purchased by calling (949) 338-0875 or at www.goldstar.com. For more information please visit www.thechelawebsite.com.
