News from the Brown Side of Town

?íOrale, mi gente! Still plenty of summer heat to go around, verdad? Kids are going back to school soon, so get your shopping done, and PLEASE be careful driving them crowded malls!

I been on a short writing hiatus due to some traveling about in the Land of 1000 Dances now that gas prices have come down a bit, and because my computer was out on OnnaConna status (onnaconna I didn't pay the bill on time, LOL!)

Oh well, it's ALL good, and I've gotten to see some old friends in action, and put in some time tirando chancla con mi mujer y la Gente, and took a long overdue cruise through Aztlan..

In between, I saw the stock market fall over 600 points one morning, and I KNOW rich folks thought of laying off a gardener & maid or two, hoping to GOD they don't lay off any more police and bust any more dirty politicians, lest they get robbed or burglarized ... I say the latter in jest as I actually heard an executive in an elevator in Los Angeles actually discussing the fear his wife had of staying home all day in north Pasadena ... where some REALLY nice mansions exist ... while all the "unemployed" people are out looking for work, hitting the beat on the streets, sometimes in THEIR neighborhood, GOD forbid...

I had to laugh out loud at this one ... I know I disturbed the executive and his equally white and perturbed colleague, but they were too small, scrawny, and middle aged to give me any shit when I eyeballed their looks of disdain & resentment right back at them in their face ... so I really enjoyed being large and BROWN at the moment! ... I do everyday anyway, but his time I shared it with somebody without a single word!

Speaking of Brown ... qu?® paso con "America's Mexican", George Lopez? Vato got bumped off the set for a white dude who ain't doing THAT much better in the ratings ...
hmmm ... maybe TELEMUNDO, UNIVISION. the ALMA Awards & Latin Grammys crowd can step and give homie a hand ...after all, he helped bring THEM to Aztlan!

...word on the street is that a lot of George's local older homies de San Fernando and Pacoima are snickering and sharing happy wisecracks and one liner-kidney jokes a la Kirstie Alley...

...que gacho when the mighty fall, huh?...ahh, well...hang in there , George!

The last couple of weeks have been jammin' otherwise across Aztlan for the Gente Brown ... watcha:

The last weekend of July saw about a quarter million people spend 2 days in the beautiful "Barrio by the Sea" ... Oxnard, California, for the 18th Annual Salsa Festival, as ORQUESTA CHARANGOA, ANGEL LEBRON y su SABOR LATINO, ORQUESTA SON MAYOR, PHIL ROBINSON & SONORA BORINQUENA, the JANEEN PUENTE ORCHESTRA, and TOBACO y RON took the Gente to a different level with dazzling salsa music , dancing and a great time.

Happy Birthday Pablo Ortiz!

Last week, PEPE MARQUEZ and ROCKY PADILLA rocked the Gente in downtown Santa Barbara at the Annual Santa Barbara Festival for more than 3 days, while ANTHONY PRIETO and his band gave up a killer performance for a fundraiser for the Carpinteria Boys & Girl's Club...and these bruthas were JAMMIN' too !

...Anthony Prieto also did a killer show for the Veterans of the Marine Corps League and American Legion in San Fernando at the historic San Fernando American Legion Hall, and we can't wait to have them back!

Last week saw the COMPANY BAND, featuring FRANKIE FONTAINE, come in and "WOW" the hometown crowds of San Fernando-Sylmar-Pacoima for a 40-year plus reunion of "the old neighborhood" and several hometown Car Clubs from back in the day at the Alemany Hall in Mission Hills, along with the reunion of 1960's popular local music group THE GEMS. Music celebrities such as singers RUDY SALAS of TIERRA and his lady JoAnna, along with Tejano star JOHNNY HERNANDEZ, VALENTINA ESTRADA, LARRY TARIN were spotted in the crowd having a good time out on the dance floor, as the crowd of over 600 kicked chancla till well after midnight.

Johnny & Valentina later on performed on the World Wide cable TV Show "THEE MR. DURAN" the next day, and gave up great performances. Check them and other great Chicano music performers out at www.mrduran.com.

The Annual VATOS Y VICLAS BLUES & BAR-B-QUE in Temecula went off well despite some earlier rain last week , with BLUES STRAIGHT UP, JUMPIN' JACK BENNY, and the 44's giving up some great blues on a great Sunday afternoon in Southern Califas. What a party!!

BLUES STRAIGHT UP has a great new "live" CD for sale, recorded at the San Fernando American Legion Hall earlier this year, and it's HOT! Log onto www.bluesstraightup.com and order yours today!

Coming back strong after a short break, THEE MIDNITERS, featuring GREG ESPARZA, along with DJ/Radio Personality JIMMY REYES of popular L.A. FM radio station 92.3 put on the heat at CUBAN PETE's, formerly known as the LAKEWOOD HOP, this past Friday night, and kicked up a pretty good sized crowd on the dance floor.

And speaking of the MIDNITERS, original member GEORGE SALAZAR, along with former lead singer of Thee MIDNITERS HANK CASTRO, team up with GILBERT STOKES, formerly of EL CHICANO, and EDDIE RODRIGUEZ, formerly of The LiL' HEARTBREAKERS, along with a great backup band known as The 2nd TIME AROUND Band, and come to the San Fernando American Legion Hall on August 19th for a one night appearance.

LOUIE PARRA & the MAD LATINS rocked the house at Pomona's Back Door Lounge Friday, at a Latin Luau to a packed crowd that didn't want the party to end. The MAD LATINS are on the road, they're hot, and they're coming to the San Fernando American Legion Hall this October ... keep your eye on the LatinoLA calendario page!

As the summer hits it peak, so does the summer concert/party/club scene schedule for the "big kids" in the Land of 1000 Dances, and great bands de Los like SOTO, BALANCE, SUAVE, IMPULSE, ACE, SATISFACTION, NEW BREEZE w/ROCKY PADILLA,BLUES STRAIGHT UP, BOB DeSENA,HINDSIGHT, ACE,SUAVE, SANGRIA,L.A.BLUE,CHINO ESPINOSA, SUSIE HANSEN,SOUL PURSUIT,COLD DUCK, and guys from out of town like PEPE MARQUEZ, BARELA, VUDU CAFE,and The KOOL KATZ, are all converging on the City of Angels in the Land of 1000 Dances at places like:
